With so many different shoes on the market it can be difficult to know which one is best for you. There are many different types, materials, styles and brands. Overall, there are a few must-haves when it comes to golf shoes, a couple if-you-can-afford-its and a few don’t-worry-about-its.
The Two Must Haves
Fit - Just like any other shoes, if it doesn’t fit you’re not going to want to wear it. Even if you typically ride, you don’t want any pinching, rubbing or bad fits since you’ll feel it in your swing. test them out, take some steps, wiggle your toes around and take a practice swing.
Waterproofing - If you play anywhere there might be inclimate weather, make absolute sure your shoes, most importantly soles, are waterproof! This is obviously less important if you’re in the desert, but still never hurts. Of course they’re going to be a bit more expensive, but if you need it, it’s more than worth it.
To Spike Or Not To Spike
There are two types of shoes going around these days - spikes and spikeless. More traditional golfers use removable spikes and most younger players go spikeless. It can certainly be a hassle to buy and replace spikes that chip off and break, but some players like the feel and aren’t going to change any time soon. It’s tradition.
Spikeless shoes are much more convenient for the regular golfer for two reasons: you don’t have to worry about carrying extra spikes or replacing them and they are typically more comfortable and feel more like a running shoe. More styles are coming out in spikeless form than any other. That’s the way the trend is going.
Style It Up
There are saddle, athletic, slip-ons and even sandals (but please, don’t buy golf sandals). Style is certainly your preference but a good tip is to try to have shoes in a color that matches the color of most of your polos. You’re always safe with white, black, gray or brown but if you want to spice things up with some accents or full colors try blue, green and silver.
We will continue to include many different brands and styles in our SP4 Club boxes:
Somebody once told me a man’s style starts from the bottom up so don’t overlook the importance of picking out a nice pair of golf shoes. First fit, then style!
