Our Visit to Cabot Citrus Farms: Reviving a Florida Golf Legacy
Recently, we had the pleasure of visiting Cabot Citrus Farms, formerly known as World Woods Golf Club in Brooksville, FL. The transformation of this beloved golf destination under Cabot, a highly respected Canadian-based golf resort developer, is nothing short of remarkable. Here’s a firsthand look at the revitalized Cabot Citrus Farms and what it offers.
A New Era for World Woods
Stepping onto the grounds of the former World Woods, we could immediately sense the history and potential of the place. Once renowned for its Rolling Oaks and Pine Barrens courses, the club had unfortunately declined due to maintenance budget constraints. However, Cabot, a popular Canadian golf resort development group has acquired the land and is restoring its former glory to another level. Cabot's commitment to restoration and excellence is already evident.
Our Experience
Our team members Corey and Layne spent the day at Cabot Citrus Farms recently so here's a first-hand account of Layne telling his perspective on the day.
After seeing Cabot Citrus Farms on our social media feeds for months, Corey and I decided it was time to get a closer look. We drove the two hours from Sarasota up to Brooksville in order to spend the day on property.
The first thing we noticed as we pulled in was the incredible amount of construction being done on the cabins that line the entrance. These cabins are future lodging locations for people who are planning on doing a stay and play visit and will be beautiful weekend spots once they're completed.
As we reached the end of the long winding driveway, we spotted the club house where the outside staff was quick to get us setup on a golf cart and point us in the direction of the pro shop. As soon as the pro shop doors opened, we knew we were in for a treat. The popular orange, white, and green colors of Cabot Citrus Farms lit up the room nearly as much as the bubbly personalities of the ladies behind the counter who were quick to help us out.
Hats, flags, polos, and club covers are just a few of the items you see lining the walls and shelves upon walking in. The famous orange logo combined with the Florida-esque color combinations made me want one of everything.
Once we completed our shopping, we followed the brick path back the way we came in to find the state-of-the-art practice facility which featured a Trackman simulator at every bay. Next to that was the largest 18 hole putting green I have ever seen in my life. The putting green alone could have entertained us for the afternoon. Separated into two sections by giant rolling hills, this putting green could be one of the best in the game.
A quick jog up the stairs next to the putting green gave us our first view of the property from above which of course was stunning. In this bustling area, you can find a vintage vehicle converted into a pizza truck, coolers of chilled towels, a full bar, and anything else you could need before, during, or after a round.
After several brief rain delays and taking cover in the snack shack, it was time to get out on The Squeeze, a nine-hole regulation size course that showcases what you can expect from the full course.
The Squeeze features rolling hills, tough bunkers, and perfectly rolling greens. We were even treated to the sight of a VIP helicopter pickup just off the side of the course, certainly a first for us.
After we came off The Squeeze, we had a quick water break and immediately went back to it. We each grabbed a Cabot Citrus Farms sunday bag and threw a couple wedges and a putter into them to prepare for The Wedge, an 11 hole par three course. The Wedge was as fun as it was challenging and a must play if you are ever on property.
We unfortunately weren't scheduled to play the Karoo, the first completed renovation of 18 holes but were hoping to get back in the near future. We rounded out the afternoon with another quick putting contest and one of the best transfusions you're ever going to find. We couldn't have asked for a better day and we couldn't recommend Cabot Citrus Farms enough. We would suggest heading there now before the prices rise!
Renovations and Enhancements
Completed Projects: The newly redesigned practice area is a golfer’s dream, equipped with state-of-the-art facilities. The short course, executive course, and putting course, inspired by The Nest at Cabot Cape Breton, are not only challenging but also incredibly fun. The Karoo course, a stunning 18-hole layout, is now open and ready to impress.
Ongoing Developments: Construction of the Roost, another 18-hole course, is well underway. Additionally, Rolling Oaks and Pine Barrens are being meticulously restored to their former glory.
Comprehensive Cabot Experience
Cabot Citrus Farms aims to offer more than just exceptional golf. During our visit, we discovered a range of luxurious accommodations and diverse amenities designed to create a holistic experience.
One of the charming traditions that Cabot Citrus Farms has continued is handing out world-class sugar cookies on the first tee. This delightful gesture adds a sweet start to every round. The course colors, orange and green, are prominently featured throughout the golf shop, reflecting the vibrant spirit of Florida.
The driving range features state of the art Trackman simulators so you have real-time feedback with every shot you hit. Nearby, is a massive 18-hole, night-lit putting green so the fun carries on even after the sun goes down.
Once you've got your putter dialed in and a feel for the tremendous greens at Cabot, head over to the Wedge, an 11-hole par three course that makes for the perfect warmup.
If you're looking for a further challenge, a 9-hole executive style course called the Squeez is just one step up. The Squeez gives players an inside look at the challenges they can expect to face on the full 18-hole courses. On the first tee, don't forget to chat with the starter and grab one of their world famous sugar cookies and a handful (or two) of the beautiful Cabot inspired orange tees and ball markers.
Finally, let the fun really begin by teeing it up on Karoo, the first full 18-hole course to be renovated by Cabot. This course displays a wide expanse of sand, hills, and pines, nestled within 80 feet of elevation changes. A true challenge for golfers of any skill level.
After your round, an outdoor hangout area offers a pizza truck, tacos, drinks, music, and so much more. Just one day at Cabot is not enough to truly take in how incredible this property is.
One of the most unique moments we had on the course was when a helicopter landed behind the driving green to pick up a "VIP Guest". Now that's full service.
